Best Store Accounts in South Africa
A store account (store card) is a line of credit you use at a particular retailer or group. It can be handy for spreading the cost of clothing and essentials and for member perks — but it's credit under the National Credit Act, so interest and fees apply if you don't pay within the interest-free window. Below we compare South Africa's main store accounts.
How store accounts work
You're given a credit limit to spend in-store and online. If you pay your balance in full within the interest-free period, you pay no interest. Carry a balance and interest (plus a monthly service fee and often mandatory credit life insurance) kicks in. Some accounts offer fixed 6 or 12-month payment plans on bigger purchases. Always check the interest rate and fees before signing.

How to use a store account wisely
- Pay in full each month to stay interest-free.
- Watch the extras — monthly fees and credit life insurance add to the cost.
- Don't open accounts you won't use — each one is a credit agreement on your record.
- Compare to a credit card — a credit card often has a longer interest-free period and works everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Do store accounts charge interest?
Only if you don't pay within the interest-free period. After that, interest, a monthly service fee and credit life insurance apply.
Does a store account build my credit score?
Yes — used responsibly and paid on time, it helps build a credit record. Missed payments hurt it.
Is a store account better than BNPL?
For one-off purchases, BNPL is interest-free if paid on time. A store account is ongoing revolving credit — more flexible, but it charges interest.
