Best Life Insurance in South Africa
Life insurance pays a lump sum to your family if you die, clearing debt and replacing your income so they can carry on. The right cover amount depends on your debts, dependants and income — and the right insurer depends on whether you value rewards, the lowest premium, or the simplest sign-up. Below we compare South Africa's biggest life insurers.
How much cover do you need?
A common rule of thumb is 10–15 times your annual income, plus enough to settle your home loan and other debts and to fund your children's education. Premiums are based on your age, health, lifestyle (smoking especially) and cover amount, so younger and healthier applicants lock in lower rates. How to get the best deal
- Buy young and healthy. Premiums only rise with age — locking in early is cheaper for life.
- Be honest on your application. Non-disclosure is the top reason claims are rejected.
- Match riders to your needs. Add disability or severe-illness cover only where it makes sense.
- Review after big life events — a bond, marriage or a child changes how much cover you need.
The four types of life cover — and which you need
"Life insurance" is often used loosely. The four building blocks are different products, and most families need a mix:
- Life cover (death benefit) pays a lump sum to your beneficiaries when you die — to settle debt, replace your income and provide for dependants.
- Disability cover pays out if illness or injury stops you working permanently.
- Critical-illness (dread disease) cover pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a serious condition like cancer, a heart attack or stroke.
- Income protection replaces a portion of your monthly salary if you cannot work for a while — see our income protection guide.
How life cover is priced
Your premium is based on your age, sex, smoker status, health and the cover amount. The younger and healthier you are when you take it out, the cheaper it is — and most policies lock in your insurability, so buying earlier protects you against future health changes. Larger policies may require a medical exam or blood tests; smaller cover is often available with just a few health questions.
How the payout works
A lump sum paid to a nominated beneficiary is generally paid out quickly and is not subject to income tax in their hands, and it usually falls outside the lengthy estate process. Keep your nominated beneficiaries up to date — after marriage, divorce or a new child — so the money goes where you intend.
How to get the right cover for less
Work out what you actually need — enough to clear your debts (home loan, car, credit) and replace your income for your dependants' needs — rather than over-insuring. Then compare quotes: premiums for the same cover vary widely between insurers, so getting a few quotes is the single biggest saving.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between life cover and funeral cover?
Life cover pays a large lump sum (often millions) after underwriting; funeral cover pays a smaller amount fast to cover funeral costs, with little or no underwriting.
Do I need a medical exam?
It depends on the cover amount and insurer. Smaller cover often needs only health questions; larger cover may require medical tests.
Is life insurance worth it if I'm single?
If no one depends on your income, your need is lower — but cover can still settle debts so they don't fall to your estate or family.
