Best Credit Cards in South Africa

☆ Stoor

The best credit card for you depends on how you use it. If you clear your balance every month, chase rewards and a long interest-free period. If you sometimes carry a balance, a low interest rate and a low monthly fee matter far more than points. Below we compare credit cards from South Africa's big banks and show which suits which type of spender.

How credit-card costs work in South Africa

Three things drive what a card really costs you:

  • Monthly account fee — a fixed fee you pay whether or not you use the card. The cheapest big-bank cards start around R40 a month.
  • Interest — charged only on balances you don't pay off in full. It's risk-based and legally capped at 24.85% per year (the NCA credit-facility cap for 2026). Pay in full each month and you pay no interest.
  • Interest-free days — most SA cards give up to 55 days (Absa up to 57) interest-free on purchases if you pay your statement balance in full.

Use our credit card repayment calculator to see how a balance grows — and how fast you can clear it.

How we chose

We compared the major banks' cards on monthly fee, rewards value, interest rate, interest-free period and the strength of the app and perks. Because rates are personalised, we don't publish a fake "from" rate where a bank doesn't disclose one. Figures are indicative and verified June 2026 — confirm your offer with the bank. Ratings are Rateweb's editorial opinion.

The best credit cards at a glance

  • Best overall — Capitec GlobalOne. One simple low-fee card, interest from prime, 1% cash back and up to 55 interest-free days.
  • Best rewards — FNB. eBucks earns up to 15% back on fuel and selected groceries, with a tier for every income.
  • Best for low interest — Discovery Bank. Among the lowest personalised rates, plus Discovery Miles.
  • Best low fee — Standard Bank Blue. The cheapest big-bank card account fee, with UCount rewards.
  • Best interest-free period — Absa. The longest in the market, up to 57 days.

See fees, rewards and interest-free days for all the cards in the comparison below.

How to choose the right card

  • If you always pay in full, optimise for rewards and interest-free days — FNB eBucks or Absa's long interest-free period shine here.
  • If you sometimes carry a balance, prioritise a low rate and low fee — Capitec, Discovery Bank or Standard Bank Blue cost less to hold.
  • Match the rewards to your life. A programme only pays if you spend where it earns (fuel, groceries, travel).
  • Don't pay for a tier you won't use. Lounge access and travel perks are only worth the higher fee if you'll actually use them.
  • Check your credit score first. A better credit score means a better rate and limit.

The interest-free period — your biggest advantage

Used well, a credit card is cheaper than cash. If you pay your statement balance in full each month you typically get up to around 55 interest-free days on purchases — an interest-free short-term loan. Carry a balance, though, and interest applies, so the golden rule is to clear the full balance every month and never just pay the minimum.

Match the card type to how you spend

  • Low-fee / low-interest cards suit you if you sometimes carry a balance.
  • Rewards and cash-back cards pay you to spend — worth it only if you pay in full and the rewards beat the fee.
  • Travel cards add airport lounge access and travel insurance.
  • Premium cards bundle concierge and richer rewards for a higher fee.

Credit card vs debit card vs store account

A debit card spends your own money with no interest or credit benefit. A store account only works at one retailer and often charges high interest. A credit card builds your credit record, offers the interest-free period and works everywhere — the most flexible option if you manage it responsibly.

How to qualify and improve your odds

Approval and your rate depend on your income and credit profile. Check your credit score first, keep existing accounts in good standing, and apply for a card that matches your income tier rather than the most premium one you can find.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum credit-card interest rate in South Africa?

For credit facilities like credit cards, the NCA cap in 2026 is 24.85% per year. Your actual rate is set on your credit profile and is often lower.

How do interest-free days work?

If you pay your full statement balance by the due date each month, you pay no interest on purchases — effectively a free short-term loan of up to 55–57 days. Carry a balance and interest applies.

Is a credit card better than a personal loan?

For short-term, repaid-in-full spending, a credit card is usually cheaper and more flexible. For a large, fixed purchase you'll repay over years, a personal loan with a fixed rate and term is often the better fit.
